Sylence
What is Sylence?
Sylence, pronounced “silence”, is an Android ringer silencing application. “Why the y?” you ask? Well, I don’t have any logical or rational reason for it, I just happen to like the “Sy” combination for some reason. But I digress…
Sylence allows the user to create “silence alarms” which will turn off the phone’s ringer at a specific time and date or a recurring time period.
What doesn’t Sylence do?
Currently, Sylence does not support silencing the ringer based on location. It also doesn’t adjust the volume of your ringer for any reason. The volume stays at what you set it to, the ringer just gets toggled on or off. As the AdMob SDK requires use of the internet and access network state permissions, these new permission requests are being added to the application as I write this. No personal data is asked for or utilized by Sylence itself.
Sylence does have two significant issues that will be addressed in an upcoming version:
- When the ringer is silenced, there’s no simple way to cancel the silenced mode prematurely without disabling or deleting the silence alarm. So, for instance, if you have an alarm scheduled from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm for a meeting, and the meeting ends at 1:00 pm, you currently must disable or delete the alarm in Sylence to turn your ringer back on. Otherwise, just turning your ringer back on via the Android UI will result in Sylence doing its job again within a minute or two, and turning the ringer back off.
- Similarly, if you turn off the ringer through the Android UI (other than turning the ringer volume all the way down) but Sylence doesn’t have an alarm for the current time, you will find that Sylence will turn the ringer back on.
These issues will be addressed in an upcoming version.
How much Sylence cost?
Sylence costs approximately US $1.00 in the Android Market, not a lot of money. Sylence is now free of charge to all that are interested in using it. An ad supported version is in the works as of this moment (4:35 pm November 27, 2011), but is not quite ready yet. As soon as it is, it will be posted to the Android Market as all previous versions have been.
Where will Sylence be available?
Sylence is available in all countries that support the Android Market. Currently, it’s only available in English because I only speak English, however if you’re willing to contribute a translation, please contact me, I would be happy to include it in a future release.
You may download Sylence via the Android Market now.
